Community Service Learning integrates community service with academic
learning to enhance both. UMass students can engage in CSL by:
- Taking a course that has CSL already built into it. Many academic
departments across the University offer CSL courses, where CSL is either a
requirement or an option for all students. Many CSL courses are Honors
Courses. The links in this paragraph or on the sidebar on the left provide
more information about these courses.
- Adding CSL to a course. A student can negotiate with a faculty
member to add a CSL Independent Study course of 1 or 2 credits to a university
course that faculty member is teaching already.
- Creating a CSL course. With a faculty sponsor, students can design
their own freestanding 1-2 credit course (a CSL Practicum). Students can also,
with a faculty sponsor, design their own 3-6 credit CSL Independent Study
course to fit their academic and service interests.
